| Progress
on the Norden bombsight building is continuing at a rapid pace,
the walls have all been steam cleaned and painting has commenced.
New windows and sills have been installed and the building is now
weather proof. Charlie, whose collection of 1940’s uniforms
will eventually be displayed in here, has carried out much of the
internal work Unfortunately some of the original ceiling ducting
was too corroded to leave in place and for safety reasons has been
removed. The good sections have been left and in time the missing
pieces may well be recreated.
This
building was used for the storage and repair of the Norden Bomb
sight. The Norden Bomb sight was a form of computer which, when
set with the type of bomb load, flying height, and speed of aircraft
would fly the aircraft on the bomb run over the target via the aircrafts
auto pilot and make correction for drift enabling the bombardier
to drop the bombs at the precise time to hit the target.
In the 1940’s this sight was considered to be top secret and
an armed guard was outsde at all times.
The
Norden Bombsight Vault was a desirable place to work in at Debach
as it was the only building on the airfield to be heated and air-conditioned.
The Norden Bombsight building at Debach had not been used for the
last 40 years until restoration started January 2004. |
